August is Happiness Happens Month
Caregiver in Havana FL
How wonderful is that there is an entire month dedicated simply to being happy? August is celebrated as Happiness Happens Month to help all people see the happiness that surrounds them every day. While there may be times in our lives that aren’t happy times, there are benefits to having a positive attitude and doing things that make us happy. For many caregivers, the feeling of happiness can get ignored as other feeling such as stress, worry, and guilt take over. During the month of August, it is a great time for family caregivers to search for the happiness and positivity in their lives. With a happier outlook, caregivers can give care better and even reduce their own stress. Here are just a few ways caregivers can make a change this month to have a more positive outlook and happier days.
Laugh Often
Children can barely go a few minutes or hours without laughing, but adults can sometimes make it several days. Think about the last time you laughed. Was it too long ago to remember? If so, it is a great idea to try to get more laughter back into your life. Laughter has proven health benefits and it can even reduce negative feelings and emotions. If has been awhile since you have found something to be funny or amusing, try adding some humor into your every life. Unwind at night with a funny 30 minute sitcom or read a humorous book. These little things may not seem important, but they can make a big difference when it comes to your happiness.
Show Gratitude
Taking the time to be mindful of the positive aspects of your life is important to do often. If you don’t, it is easy to forget them and let stress and negativity take over. To try bring to mind the things you are grateful for each day by keeping a gratitude journal. At night before going to bed, simply write down three things you are grateful for, no matter how big or small. Take some time every so often to read older entries, as well, as reminders.
Be Social
You know that social interaction is important for your loved one, but what you may not realize is that it is important for you to! Take the time each week to do something social, even if it is just a quick phone call to a friend. You may find that interacting with others can boost your mood and theirs, too.
