Elderly Care in Tallahassee FLElderly-Care-in-Tallahassee-FL

Sometimes your elderly loved one is tired and wants to sleep, but doesn’t feel safe enough to get the sleep that she needs. In that case, you may need to make some different types of changes.

Install a Security System

One of the biggest ways to help your elderly loved one to feel more secure right away is to install a security system. Some even have features for elderly loved ones such as a personal alarm that your loved one can use if she should fall or have another type of emergency. Many security systems have additional features, such as exterior lighting or cameras that can help your loved one to see what is going on outside without endangering herself.

Install Night Lighting and Reduce the Risk of Falling

If your loved one doesn’t feel secure getting up in the middle of the night, that can be enough to keep her awake, too. Look for things such as slippery rugs, clutter, or other items that could cause a tripping hazard. Consider installing night lights so that your loved one has a little bit more visibility at night. Another good idea is to install hand rails in key locations so that your loved one always has something to reach out and grab if she feels unsteady on her feet.

Practice the Evening Procedure for Securing the House

Some of these changes are quite large ones, so they can throw off your loved one’s nightly routine even if they’re changes that she wants. It’s a good idea to run through your loved one’s new evening routine, particularly if it involves setting an alarm system for the night. That way you’re both familiar with the new routine and you can help her to adjust anything that still isn’t working for her.

Make Sure Your Loved One Can Contact You at Night

When you and your elderly loved one don’t live in the same home, night time can be when she feels that she needs you the most. It’s a good idea to make sure that your loved one can easily contact you at night if she needs to. Double check that your ringers are on and that you can easily access the phone if it should ring in the middle of the night.

Your loved one may also be interested in having elderly care providers available overnight as an added level of security.
