Staying Safe in the Summer Heat: Tips for Seniors

Understanding heat risks for older adults

Summer brings longer days, sunshine, and warmer temperatures, but it also comes with unique risks, especially for older adults. Seniors are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses due to changes in the body’s ability to regulate temperature, certain medications, and health conditions.

High temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Signs to watch for include dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, confusion, and excessive sweating. Seniors may also be less aware of thirst, making it easier to become dehydrated without realizing it. Being aware of these risks is the first step toward prevention.

Heat safety precautions for seniors

Hot summer days don’t have to keep seniors stuck inside. With simple planning and careful precautions, older adults can safely enjoy time outdoors without overheating.

Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is one of the simplest and most effective ways seniors can protect themselves from heat-related illness. Drinking water regularly, even before feeling thirsty, helps the body stay cool, maintain energy, and support overall health during hot summer days. Some easy ways to stay hydrated include:

  • Drink eight or more cups of water per day
If you do not have fluid intake restrictions, make sure to drink eight or more cups of fluids a day. Water is the best option, but fruit juices and other clear liquids also do the trick.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine
Alcohol and caffeine can do the opposite of hydration and actually lead to dehydration. Avoid sodas, coffee, and teas, as well as alcoholic beverages if you are going to be out in the heat.
  • Eat hydrating foods
Hydrating foods, such as watermelon, berries, citrus, lettuce, and cucumbers are all great ways to keep hydrated. Make sure to still drink adequate fluids even if eating hydrating foods.
  • Be proactive
Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to start drinking water – this is a sign of dehydration. Take sips of water throughout the day, even when you don’t feel thirsty. A reusable water bottle is a great way to get the recommended 8 cups per day!

Dress for success

Staying safe and comfortable in the summer means paying attention to how to dress and protect oneself. Simple steps include:

  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing
Lightweight, natural fabrics, like cotton and linen, are the best options for keeping cool during the summer. Stick to light colors that reflect the sun’s rays, as opposed to dark blacks, blues, or greys.
  • Don’t forget the accessories
Sunglasses and hats are necessities for keeping the sun off your face and out of your eyes. A large-brimmed sun hat and sunglasses that have UV protection against UVA and UVB rays are the most effective.
  • Apply (and reapply) sunscreen
Choose a sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 or higher, and make sure to reapply at least every two hours. Additionally, the sun is most intense during the middle of the day, so try to avoid being outside during these hours, if possible, opting for early morning or evening instead.

Know your medication side effects

Several types of medications can increase the risk of heat exhaustion. These medications can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate temperature and may cause dehydration or reduced sweating, making it harder to cope with heat.

Common medications include diuretics, beta-blockers, anticholinergics, and antipsychotics, among others.
